Physical activity and the return to school

Lockdown has been tough for young people.

Making physical activity part of the school day, every day, will help young people settle into school-based learning, and help to undo some of the negative impacts of lockdown.

We have created some free resources, including short e-learning modules to support all school staff, senior leaders and governors to understand the benefits that making physical activity part of every day can have. How it can improve pupil's health, including mental health as well as other aspects that can improve their learning behaviours and outcomes. It also provides practical information of how to maximise the resource already available to schools.

Active Travel

Girl On Scooter Active Travel

Active Travel is the means by which we get somewhere – but ensuring we do it ACTIVELY. Be it walking, cycling or scooting (or even skipping!) it just involves being physical when getting from place to place. Plus, it allows us to increase our levels of physical activity within our day.

Schools are encouraged to support their pupils in being active for at least an average of 60 minutes a day, in order to give them the best chance of leading a healthy lifestyle (CMO Guidelines 2019). Active Travel is a great way to contribute towards this.

Check out how your school can develop its Active Travel offer to help pupils achieve 60 active minutes a day:
