Physical Activity and Health E-learning

Moving Healthcare Professionals is a national partnership programme by Public Health England and Sport England. It's designed to help support healthcare professionals in promoting physical activity to the public. As part of the programme, Public Health England, Sport England and Health Education England have developed a free physical activity and health e-learning programme, which is hosted on the e-Learning for Healthcare hub.

The e-learning programme prepares healthcare professionals and other frontline staff to champion the benefits of physical activity with their patients and, in doing so, help prevent and/or manage a range of common physical and mental health conditions.

The free programme includes 11 different modules, you can pick and choose which ones you complete. The modules are:

Introduction to Physical Activity

Three short introductory sessions cover the importance of physical activity, the health benefits of physical activity, and the UK Chief Medical Officers' national guidelines, plus an assessment

Promoting Physical Activity in Primary Care

This session is primarily designed for GPs and practice nurses. It will help you to motivate your patients to move more

Children and Young People: Being Active

This session discusses the positive impact of physical activity on children and young people

Older Adults: Being Active

This session discusses the positive impact of physical activity on older people

Cardiovascular Conditions: Being Active

This session discusses the positive impact of physical activity on people living with cardiovascular conditions

Type 2 Diabetes: Being Active

This session discusses the positive impact of physical activity on diabetes

Cancer Conditions: Being Active

This session discusses the positive impact of physical activity on people living with cancer

Mental Health: Being Active

This session discusses the positive impact of physical activity on mental health conditions

Musculoskeletal Health: Being Active

This session examines the positive impact of physical activity on musculoskeletal health

Pregnancy and Postnatal Period: Being Active

This session discusses being active throughout pregnancy and after childbirth (birth to 12 months) by raising awareness of the current national physical activity guidelines and thereby empowering pregnant women and new mothers to make informed choices about physical activity throughout motherhood

Motivational Interviewing Video

This video presents a few ideas on how to use motivational interviewing to encourage behaviour change to patients

Each session lasts approximately 20-25 mins, however a short 5 minute summary of the evidence is available for some modules. A certificate of completion is generated when the full version of a module is completed.
