Being sensitive to people’s barriers to physical activity is important as everyone will have different reasons for not increasing their activity levels.

Many people do not realise walking counts as physical activity, they think they need to go to the gym or run.

Common barriers to being active

  • Lack of time
  • Lack of information
  • Lack of motivation
  • Exercise is boring
  • Can’t afford it
  • Have a long term condition
  • Have to be fit to exercise
  • Anyone to do it with
  • Previous negative experiences

Addressing barriers through led walks

  • Specific walking events give reason to walk
  • It’s free
  • Walking is suitable for all, including the inactive population
  • Safe to take part even with a long term health condition
  • Route is planned so you just turn up and walk
  • Don’t need anyone to attend with you
