The Programme

Dragons On The Move is an exciting project that grew out of the On The Move programme, which ran from 2019 to 2023. It was created to support young adults with disabilities as they move from education into adult life, with a strong focus on empowerment and independence.

Central to this work is our collaboration with the Disability Real Action Group of Norfolk (DRAGONs). This dynamic group of young people with disabilities travels across Norfolk, visiting clubs and leisure centres to assess how accessible and user-friendly they are for people with disabilities or additional mobility needs. Their assessments help to drive inclusivity and improve the overall experience for everyone who uses these facilities.

Impact Summary

The Dragons play an invaluable role in reviewing leisure facilities. Their assessments are not mere evaluations; they’re a catalyst for change, driving improvements in accessibility and inclusivity across the sector.

Their unique insights, borne out of their personal experiences and perspectives, are a powerful tool in our mission to create a more inclusive and accessible environment. These insights are helping us understand the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and are guiding our efforts to address these challenges effectively.

The Dragons have also engaged with specialist education settings, including the Pathways programme at Parkside and students at King’s Lynn Academy. These interactions aim to grow the volunteer network, raise awareness of accessibility in local sports and leisure settings, and inspire more young people with disabilities to get involved.

We recently produced a case study showing our visit to King’s Lynn Academy, helping to showcase the impact of this work. Check it out in our case studies section below.

The Dragons have played a key role in strengthening relationships with leisure providers, most notably through ongoing work with Alive West Norfolk. They’ve visited several of the organisation’s sites in West Norfolk, including Downham, St James, Oasis, and Lynnsport to review accessibility and usability.

This partnership has led to a deeper, more sustained collaboration, with the DRAGONs now recognised as key stakeholders in shaping inclusive practices. Check out our case study videos below to see the impact of this work.

The growing demand for the Dragons’ reviews highlights a crucial gap in the leisure sector – the need for accessibility insights from those with disabilities. New providers are increasingly interested, recognising the value of these reviews. The Dragons’ unique perspective helps leisure facilities become truly inclusive, transforming the sector one review at a time.

The rising demand for the Dragons’ input reflects a growing recognition of the value of ‘lived experience’ in shaping accessible environments. Leisure facilities and sports clubs are now actively approaching the group for reviews and support, with interest continuing to grow.

In partnership with the Active Norfolk Welfare Officer, efforts are also underway to extend this reach further, connecting with even more clubs across the region to promote inclusion from the ground up.
