All To Play For: Norfolk’s sport-based support programme for men
All To Play For is a football programme supporting adult men in Norfolk who may be struggling with their mental health.
Delivered in partnership with various local health services, the programme offers free, weekly, socially inclusive football sessions for men aged 18+.
We were privileged to be able to speak to some of the participants who have benefitted from this programme – take a look in our latest video.
What’s the importance of All To Play For?
In the UK, it is estimated that 12.5% of men in the UK will experience issues with their mental health at some point. That’s 1 in 8 men. Furthermore, 75% of all UK suicides are men, as they are less likely to seek support for their mental health.
All To Play For was designed to provide a safe space for men to come and engage with physical activity, and other men. Since launching, the programme has had a significant impact. More than 500 men across Norfolk have taken part, with many reporting improvements in their mental health, reduced feelings of isolation, and increased confidence.
The benefits go beyond the sessions themselves. Many participants go on to access additional support services, build new routines, and develop lasting friendships. For some, attending All To Play For sessions becomes a key step in their wider recovery journey.
Feedback from those involved highlights the difference the programme makes:
- Participants report improved mood, reduced stress and anxiety, and a greater sense of purpose
- Many say it gives them something to look forward to each week
- Others describe increased confidence and the ability to make positive lifestyle changes
“One of our most used services”
The idea is simple: turn up, play football, and be part of a group. There is no pressure to talk or share, but the opportunity is there if and when it feels right. For many men, that’s what makes the difference: creating a space where support feels natural rather than forced, and offering vital signposting to seek further help if needed.
“The All To Play For project has been really helpful for our services.” says Jason Harris, who works for NSFT and Early Intervention. “A lot of people might be struggling alone and sometimes they can get caught up in isolation, so actually this group is a nice space for them to come.”
“Lots of good feedback comes from my team; it’s one of the most used groups within our service.”
How to join All To Play For sessions
Sessions are open to men aged 18+ in Norfolk and take place across the county, making it easy for men to get involved without needing a referral or prior sign-up.
What makes All To Play For unique is the way it brings together physical activity and support in one place. Alongside the football, participants can access a range of services including mental health support, employment advice, and wellbeing guidance. This approach helps reduce stigma and creates a more comfortable environment for men to engage.
The programme has also been recognised locally for its role in tackling health inequalities and supporting men who may otherwise find it difficult to engage with traditional services.
As demand continues to grow, All To Play For is expanding across Norfolk, working with partners to reach more communities and ensure more men can access support in a way that works for them.
