Our Place work: Ensuring we meet the needs of local communities

Click here to view other Place case studies We know that where people live has an influence on their ability to be active. Our place-based approach has been designed to focus on individual districts in Norfolk, rather than looking at the whole county.

For any project or area of work, we will consider: how it can be best delivered in place to the meet the needs of different communities, how it can be made safer and more inclusive, and how it can be environmentally sustainable.

To achieve this, we have an Active Communities team, consisting of six Active Communities Officers (ACOs) who are allocated to each district in Norfolk. These Officers work to understand the needs of their area so as to be able to build strong local partner networks, and provide bespoke support that will best benefit the local communities.

Working in place is at the heart of Active Norfolk’s strategy and will continue to underpin all areas of our work.

How we work

Our Active Communities team, jointly funded with local authorities, provides:

  • Strong relationships with local organisations and communities
  • Deeper understanding of specific community needs and challenges
  • Implementation of county-wide programmes at a local level (e.g. Active Now, Big Norfolk Holiday Fun)
  • Opportunities for people to be active in their communities
  • Support in the development of local plans and strategies
  • Help securing increased funding for physical activity initiatives which will benefit the community

Sport England have committed £250m to reduce inactivity and increase activity in places that experience the greatest inequalities. 80 places were identified nationally to become Place Partnerships, three of which are in Norfolk: Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, and Breckland. Our work is closely aligned to the Marmot Place initiative in King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, led by the Institute of Health Equity.

A further £25 million has been allocated through Sport England’s Place Universal Offer to support targeted physical activity interventions, scaled and proportionate to local levels of need and disadvantage. Norfolk will receive a share of this funding, supporting activity in North Norfolk, Norwich, South Norfolk, and Broadland.

We are proud to lead this investment in Norfolk, and are working intensively with partners and communities in these areas to create long-lasting systemic change to support a healthier, more resilient, and active population.
