Our work with Sustainability: Ensuring what we do lasts

Download our Environmental Sustainability Plan At Active Norfolk, we are on a journey to becoming a more environmentally sustainable operation but also to advocate for change within the sector, communities and systems in which we enable and deliver programmes.

The changing climate is already impacting on opportunities, motivation and ability for people to be active. It is impacting the most on those who are already experiencing the greatest inequalities.
Active Norfolk’s Environmental Sustainability Action Plan moves us from advocating sustainability to actively putting it into practice. Our Environmental Sustainability Plan
2026-2028

Our Environmental Sustainability commitment

We are currently living through a climate and biodiversity crisis that is changing the environments in which we live, and importantly, from a physical activity perspective, the ways in which we move. Sport England’s latest Active Lives Survey found that 62% of adults did less physical activity as a result of extreme weather between 2024-2025.

There is strong evidence that sea levels are rising, flooding is becoming more prevalent and heatwaves more common. These factors are having an impact on opportunities for people to be active, either through the conditions they experience or the spaces they use to play and move.

We also know that the effects of climate change are disproportionately felt by those suffering from inequalities, and these are the people that are central to our mission.

Playing our part

Active Norfolk, like all organisations, has a duty to play its part in addressing some of the causes of climate change. Whilst we are developing our own learning every day regarding sustainability we will commit to increasing awareness and tangible actions with the partners we work with. Additionally we will commit to continually reviewing and improving our own carbon footprint across our day to day activities.

We must advocate for a model of physical activity that supports both people and planet, recognising that environmental sustainability and wellbeing are deeply interconnected.

By using our position to convene partners, share knowledge and promote innovation, we can help drive a shift towards more sustainable practices across the sector. To this end we have developed a robust ‘Environmental Sustainability Plan 2026-28’ which will shape our work to reduce our environmental impact both internally and externally.
