Active Lives Children and Young People’s Survey: Have your say
The Active Lives Children and Young People Survey is a survey taken in schools which measures engagement and attitudes to sport and physical activity within children and young people.
Each term, a number of schools across Norfolk are chosen to participate in the Active Lives Survey, with a mix of years 1-11 invited to take part.
Sport England produces an annual report showing the results of the Active Lives Children and Young People’s survey using the data collected. This provides useful insight into the current levels of physical activity across the country, as well as in Norfolk.

The more responses your school collects, the greater the insight you will gain into how physical activity opportunities affect the outcomes for children and young people. This data will help you evaluate the effectiveness of these activities and make informed decisions to enhance their impact. For example, you might discover trends in student engagement, identify areas where additional resources are needed, or highlight successful programs that could be expanded. By gathering a substantial number of responses, you can ensure that the feedback is representative and comprehensive, providing a solid foundation for future planning and improvement.
Survey completion varies across different year groups. For instance, secondary schools can send the survey home as homework, while primary schools are encouraged to have pupils complete it in school due to varying levels of access to technology and support at home.
Completion times also differ. Sport England suggests that the survey takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. Some schools use IT lessons for this purpose, while others survey pupils in smaller groups.
Sport England have created a new guidance document to specifically support teachers of years 3 & 4. See pages 8-14 for guidance Active Lives – Children and Young People survey Year 1-6, KS 1-2, 2024-25.
