National Fitness Day

Walk, cycle, dance, or join a walking football group. However you do it, this National Fitness Day why not buddy up with a friend, family member or colleague and get moving?

What is National Fitness Day?

People of all ages and abilities get active to improve their health and fitness on National Fitness Day. This year it falls on on Wednesday 22 September.

How does physical activity help reduce loneliness and isolation?

Physical activity and sport make valuable contributions to the health and wellbeing of people in communities. It provides opportunities for people to come together, which is a great help for people who might need some support to be more active. And this is particularly true for people who are feeling socially isolated.

It’s estimated that around 40,000 people in Norfolk experience loneliness or social isolation. Feeling lonely and isolated has a real impact on a person’s physical health and also their mental wellbeing.

Join us this National Fitness Day to show us how being active helps you feel healthy and well, and connect with others.

We are partnering with LILY, Better Together, and CAN Connect this year to recognise National Fitness Day. This year, we’ve teamed up to bring together resources and opportunities that you can access to get moving, get together, and feel connected to tackle loneliness and social isolation.

How to get involved

Whatever you enjoy doing, whether that’s fitness classes, a walk with a friend, or you want to join a local club or group – sport and physical activity are great tools to bring people together.

We encourage you to get outside with a friend, family member, neighbour or colleague. For instance, why not make the most of the fantastic natural resources which Norfolk has to offer such as the trails, coastline, cycle paths, and parks. Or even just walk down your own road and chat to your neighbours.

However, if you can’t get active on the 22nd, that’s no problem. Make a pledge to get active on the 22nd. Join a parkrun, or agree with a friend to go for a walk after dinner. All the activity will help you get fit and healthy. Plus, you can help someone who’s feeling lonely.

We’d love to see how you’ve got moving with your friends and family. Share your photos and videos with us on Facebook or Twitter using #norfolkfitnessday
