Active Travel / Bikeability

IMPACT REPORT 2025-26 Find out more about the Active Travel Survey Working with schools to increase Active Travel initiatives

The Active Travel Survey is more than a survey. It is a year-long project that supports schools to tackle a specific active travel need and track how their initiatives are increasing road safety awareness and active travel choices among pupils and families.

The Active Travel Survey Project is a partnership between Active Norfolk, Public Health’s Road Safety Team and Norfolk County Councils’ Active Travel Team, supporting 14 Norfolk schools this year to increase walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling through sustainable, school-led initiatives. Building on the success of previous Active Travel Survey and Creating Active Schools pilots, the project provides £5,000 grants, tailored support and a framework for schools to identify local barriers, track progress and embed active travel within their culture. By focusing support on schools facing the greatest need, the project aims to improve health, safety and access to active travel opportunities for pupils, families and staff.

Alongside this, the project works closely with Bikeability to help schools address barriers related to cycling confidence, safety, skills and accessibility. By connecting schools with Bikeability training opportunities and support, the project enables more young people to develop the confidence and competence to travel actively and safely, complementing wider school-led initiatives and contributing to long-term behaviour change.

By bringing together expertise from Active Norfolk, Norfolk County Council's Road Safety Team, Active Travel Team and other key stakeholders, the project has encouraged a more joined-up approach to delivery, helping to maximise impact and support long-term sustainability.

There are countless highlights including widened access to Bikeability, and several schools investing in school-owned bicycles and equipment to promote safe active travel to and from school. Several schools have even participated in national active travel campaigns, raising the profile of safe and active journeys to school.
