Active Norfolk publish new strategy: ‘Getting Norfolk Moving’

We’ve launched our new Active Norfolk Strategy: ‘Getting Norfolk Moving 2026–2030’, setting out our vision for a future where physical activity is part of everyday life for people of all ages and backgrounds.

What is ‘Getting Norfolk Moving’?

Imagine a Norfolk where everyone has the opportunity to be active, and where inequalities no longer limit people’s ability to lead healthy, fulfilling lives. ‘Getting Norfolk Moving’ is our latest strategy showing our commitment to making this vision a reality.

What’s changed in our latest strategy?

Over the past 20 years, Active Norfolk has evolved; shaped by the voices of our communities, the strength of our partnerships and a deeper understanding of the vital role movement plays in improving lives. We are now at a pivotal moment. The challenges facing our communities are significant and complex, but so too is the opportunity to create lasting, system-wide change.

Our vision and mission remain focussed on combating inequalities and removing barriers to living active lifestyles. However, we know we cannot achieve this by ourselves. It will take a collective effort; partners, communities, organisations and individuals all working together towards a shared goal. By advocating for movement, connecting organisations and ideas, and enabling communities to take action, we will create a powerful, county-wide ‘movement for movement’.

More simply put; our partnership work is crucial to success. We will make use of the connections and partnerships we’ve developed over the years to ensure we can reach all areas of the county to spread our message.

What are ‘Start, Live and Age Active’?

Physical activity is a powerful tool to address a wide range of health and wellbeing, societal and economic challenges. We have taken an insight and evidence-based approach to guide us in identifying the most urgent priorities for Norfolk and where we can have the most impact across 3 life stages:

  • Start Active focusses on supporting children and young people to develop a healthy relationship with physical activity from a young age. Through our work with schools, children’s services, active travel and activity providers, we strive to increase physical activity opportunities sooner in life.
  • Live Active is based around tackling barriers to physical activity. Our work with organisations such as Get Out, Get Active (GOGA) and Special Olympics is part of our drive to make local services more inclusive for those with disabilities, whilst projects such as All To Play For focus on providing support for those who struggle with mental health and wellbeing.
  • Age Active refers to our focus on older people, helping people stay independent and active later in life. Our Active NoW places a heavy focus on prevention, using physical activity as a tool to avoid more common long-term health conditions later in life. Programmes such as Bowl for Health and Active Libraries create additional opportunities for movement and social interaction. Our priorities through Age Active are to prevent falls and reduce levels of isolation and loneliness in the older population of Norfolk.

Working in place is at the heart of our strategy, and will continue to underpin all the above areas of work. Our Active Communities team work hard to develop our strong relationships with local organisations, and deliver projects which target their community’s needs and challenges.

How can I get involved?

Norfolk Moves is our ‘movement for movement’. Simply put, we want to unite everyone in Norfolk with a shared goal: to combat inequalities and remove barriers to physical activity.

If you want to get involved, then please sign up to our Norfolk Moves charter. We welcome statutory organisations, volunteers and clubs, members of the public and children and young people to get involved, and help us make movement part of everyday life for everyone in Norfolk.
