Director

With a background in community sports development and Further Education, I joined Active Norfolk in the summer of 2006 as Sports Development Officer. Now as Director and one of the longest serving team members at Active Norfolk, I have the privilege of leading a team of exceptional and committed professionals.

Norfolk born and bred, I have lived at various points in my life in four of the seven Local Authority areas, so I have a good understanding of what makes Norfolk so special, and the significant role that sport and physical activity plays in that. I believe sincerely that improving levels of participation in sport and physical activity contributes positively to community cohesion, educational attainment, physical and mental health and well-being as well as adding real value to the local economy.

Outside of work I have a young family and am a fan of most sports. Having hung up my rugby boots I now spend quite a bit of time riding a road bike and have entered my first triathlon this year.

Shelley Ames

Shelley Ames

Inactivity & Health Development Manager

I joined Active Norfolk in October 2006 after completing a degree in Sport & Leisure Management at Sheffield Hallam University. I have had a number of roles and worked on a variety of projects within the Active Norfolk team, including Extended Schools, Get Into and Fit4Work. I started working on the physical activity and health agenda in February 2013, and as of January 2015 moved into my role as Physical Activity & Health Development Manager.

In my current role I am responsible for developing and maintaining the relationships with health and academic partners; strategically leading on the physical activity agenda; identifying funding streams; and ensuring that provision is targeted to reduce health inequalities.

I also lead on the Localities work within Great Yarmouth, engaging with district officers and other key stakeholders within the Borough to support a reduction in physical activity levels and health and well-being improvement using a place-based approach.

Children and Young People Development Manager

Whilst studying Sports Development at University I undertook a 12 month placement with Active Norfolk. Having finished my degree I returned to Norfolk as a Rural Sports Development Officer delivering the Village Games before managing projects such as Sport Makers, Satellite Clubs and School Games.

I am now the strategic lead for Children and Young People within the organisation. My role is to develop relationships and partnerships with organisations that engage with young people to improve understanding and awareness of the importance of physical activity on young people's health and well-being; identify relevant and appropriate funding opportunities; and align resources to bring about programmes and initiatives on a needs-led basis.

I am also the Localities lead for West Norfolk and North Norfolk, which sees me working with key partners across a range of sectors in those areas to identify areas of greatest need and identify the ways in which physical activity and sport can be utilised to address local problems.

Rich Hoey

Development Manager

Rich joined Active Norfolk in early 2018 from the Community Development team at Norwich City Council, where he was Sport Development Officer for several years. During that time, Rich gained extensive experience working with local, regional, and national partners on complex community engagement and health initiatives relating to sport and physical activity.

In his role as Development Manager, Rich is the primary Localities lead for Active Norfolk, which sees him working with district officers and key stakeholders to improve and increase the quality of sport and physical activity opportunities in key areas on a place-based approach that reflects local need.

He also oversees the Workforce, Workplace, and Events activities within Active Norfolk.

Sam Watts

Sam Watts

Physical Activity Project Officer

My role at Active Norfolk involves working across the health delivery plan and new health projects to maximise opportunities for the county to get involved in sport and physical activity, primarily to those who are inactive.

My spare time consists of attending the gym, playing football, and watching all forms of sport, in particular following closely the fortunes of Norwich City FC. I am also a strength and conditioning level 2 coach and self-confessed fitness freak.

I re-joined Active Norfolk in July 2015, my role involves working on the Physical Activity Pathway (GAIN) pilot. I previously worked for Active Norfolk between 2010 and 2013, during this time I worked on the Village Games project.

Outside of work, I've recently started running. I also enjoy skiing and playing hockey.

Workplace Physical Activity Project Officer

My role at Active Norfolk is to lead on our workplace physical activity programme; supporting organisations in Norfolk to create more active, productive, healthier and happier working environments.

I joined Active Norfolk in 2009, I have previously worked on Sport Unlimited and Sportivate, two Children and Young People programmes, before moving to my current role in September 2014.

Outside of work, I enjoy walking in the countryside, playing badminton, reading and when the budget allows a bit of overseas travel!

Physical Activity Project Officer (Mobile Me)

I have a background of working on various community based programmes across Norfolk, as well as studying Sport and Education Studies at the University of Northampton. The experience I gained lead me to my current post with Active Norfolk on our Mobile Me programme, which focuses on the over 65s and is designed to address barriers to participation within this age group, and take physical activity interventions into sheltered housing and residential care homes.

In my spare time I enjoy playing/watching multiple sports including squash, badminton and football, in particular following the hugely successful Chelsea FC. I also like to travel, when time and money allows.

Project Co-ordinator (Mobile Me)

I've been working for Active Norfolk since May 2014.

My new role is Project Co-ordinator for the Mobile Me project where I will predominantly be delivering activities including Bowls, Exercise and New Age Kurling in sheltered housing schemes.

My background is working as an exercise referral instructor with clients who have long term medical conditions.

I also organise Active Norfolk's Fit4Work competitions.

In my spare time and like to keep physically active and play in various sports – some I'm better at than others!

Development Officer - Walking

I joined the Active Norfolk Team at the end of November 2007. I set up the North Norfolk Fit Together group in 2007 and am now project officer for Fit Together across the county, which encourages greater levels of sport and physical activity in adults of all ages and abilities.

I lived, trained and studied in the USA from 1993 to 2005. I received my M.A in History in 2002 concentrating on the African American experience. I run the 400m and 200m and was selected for the GB masters team for the first time in 2005. At the European Masters Championships I claimed a bronze medal in 2006 and came 6th at the Masters World Championships in Italy in 2007. I ran for Woodford Green and Essex Ladies but am now back with the City of Norwich Athletic Club. Last year I added the Veteran Norfolk 400m Record to my Senior record. Other than sprinting my hobbies include singing (in local bands), reading, and spending time with family and Teddy, my Labrador Retriever and a variety of other pets. I love animals and have been a vegan since 1993. I live in North Norfolk.

I joined Active Norfolk in 2011 working on a temporary basis, lending a hand on various projects. I moved into the Rural Sports Development Officer role working on the Village Games in the same year, before being appointed into my current Sports Development officer role in January 2015.

My current role is made up of two strands: as Lead Coaching Officer I work closely with key partners such as National Governing Bodies, Local Authorities, School Games Organisers, Coaching Providers, Clubs and Coaches to establish local structures to support the delivery of effective coach development. My National Governing Bodies liaison role sees me working closely with the Sports Development Manager to support National Governing Bodies in the delivery of their Whole Sport Plans in Norfolk.

Outside of work most of my spare time is taken up lending my hand to many sports, especially football and cricket.

I've been working for Active Norfolk since 2008. Previously I worked on the Big Lottery and Space for Sports and Arts scheme for Norfolk County Council.

In my current I role I am responsible for all a number of sports development programmes including; all things disability sport, volunteering, a number of under represented groups programmes including our 'This Girl Can in Norfolk' campaign and our BME development work. I enjoy my role as I get to work with a wide range of organisations including Schools, Clubs, Businesses, Charities, National Governing Bodies and many more. No 2 days are ever the same in this job!

I am also the lead Safeguarding Officer for Active Norfolk.

Outside of work I play hockey for North Norfolk Ladies HC as well as badminton and tennis. Travel is my other love and always enjoy planning the next trip away!

Event Manager

I joined Active Norfolk in 2014 to continue my role as Event Manager for Active Norfolk and Norfolk County Council.

In recent years I have been responsible for the delivery of the Tour of Britain and Torch Relay in Norfolk.

I also deliver events management training and advise on event safety procedures.

In my spare time I read and paint. I love camping, going to other people's events and have recently started running.

Evaluation Officer

My role is to imbed insight and evaluation across Active Norfolk's work. My aim is to help us as an organisation learn more about what works, or doesn't, by understanding and applying existing evidence, as well as generating new understanding from increasing data collection and analysis in Norfolk. I intend to use the combined insight gained from this to inform the design, delivery and development of ours, and partners services by providing information that is relevant and accessible to the sector.

In my free time I like to cycle, run, and generally spend time outdoors.

Insight & Business Support Officer

I joined Active Norfolk in April 2011. My current roles are providing PA service to the Director and managing the administrative, financial and clerical functions of Active Norfolk. I am also responsible for Active Norfolk Insight, which involves using a host of information sources to gain an accurate and deep understanding of Norfolk and its residents.

In my spare time, I cycle and walk my dogs, endlessly; I like a spot of gardening too!

I joined Active Norfolk in 2013. After obtaining my Degree in Hospitality Management at University of East Anglia I have then worked in various roles around Marketing.

My role at Active Norfolk is to support the Marketing Communications Officer with a variety of marketing activities to provide a comprehensive function for Active Norfolk.

My spare time consists of attending the gym regularly and I also love Salsa dancing.

Children and Young People Development Manager - Education

I joined the Active Norfolk team in October 2016 having worked for many years in Norwich primary schools delivering and developing PE, and working for School Sports Partnerships as a project officer delivering events, Change4Life projects and developing leadership and volunteering opportunities.

My role is to lead on the delivery of the Norfolk School Games, which is a framework that aims to provide new sporting competition opportunities and experiences for all school children in our county. I also work to support Norfolk schools with maximising their PE & Sport Premium funding. Both areas are close to my heart and enable me to continue to encourage physical activity for young people to improve.

Children and Young People Development Manager – Community & Youth Services

After completing a Sport and Leisure Management degree at the University of Brighton, I gained employment with Active Norfolk in April 2010. Since then, I have worked on a variety of projects for the CSP as well as the Norfolk County Golf Partnership.

In my current role, I lead on two Sport England initiatives – Sportivate and Satellite Clubs. Both projects share the common goal of increasing the number of young people aged 11-25 participating in regular sport / physical activity.

In my spare time I participate in a range of sporting / fitness activities including golf, tennis, table tennis, running and attending the gym. I also enjoy watching a variety of sports and frequently attend major sporting events and concerts. I am a Norwich City season ticket holder and closely follow their fortunes both home and away.

Fit Together Walks Co-ordinator

I attended Agricultural College way back in the 1980s, where I studied Rural Resource Management and have ever since worked in roles that relate to rural issues; as a Countryside Ranger in the Lee Valley, undertaking habitat management, visitor management and countryside interpretation which included leading a lot of guided walks!

I have worked for the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk for the last 16 years; much of the time working in rural community development and I now work as a project officer where I have been running the Fit Together programme since 2011.

In my spare time I love to read, listen to Radio 4, swim and spend time with my partner, children and young granddaughter!
