New research reveals the financial contribution of community sport to society

We talk a lot about the mental and physical benefits of exercise and sport.

Now, new research has been released demonstrating the social and economic contributions of sport and physical activity to society, too.

Sport England and Sheffield Hallam University have issued a report illustrating the annual £85.5 billion in social and economic returns that investment into community sport and physical activity bring in England.

Key highlights include:

  • For every £1 invested, £3.91 of impacts are generated
  • The social value – including physical and mental health, wellbeing, individual and community development – is more than £72 billion
  • The economic value of community sport-related economic activity – was £13.8 billion

The social value was provided by a healthier population, consumer expenditure, greater work productivity, improved education attainment, reduced crime, and stronger communities.

The research teams have published a 4-sider illustrating key areas of return on investment, which you can download here, or download the full report here.
