Energise Lakenham & Tuckswood

In September 2016 an exciting new two year project working in partnership with Sport England and Comic Relief was launched, aiming to encourage people in Lakenham and Tuckswood to be more physically active. The project uses sport and physical activity as a hook to address social outcomes such as isolation, unemployment or community cohesion, as identified by the residents from the Lakenham & Tuckswood area. Called 'Energise Lakenham and Tuckswood', the project is part of a wider strategic piece of work led by Norwich City Council to reduce inequality in Lakenham,

Lakenham was chosen as a focus community for this project because of 1) data and insight that exists which shows multiple levels of deprivation in the area, and 2) because of a wider strategic piece of work currently being led by Norwich City Council in the Lakenham area to reduce inequality.

'Energise Lakenham & Tuckswood aims to use Sport and physical activity to empower a community to create social change and have a positive impact on social issues, and its seven outcomes are:

  • Increase levels of physical activity
  • Reduce social isolation
  • Improved health and mental wellbeing
  • Increased community cohesion
  • Raise aspirations of residents
  • Improved sustainability
  • Earlier engagement with support services

Energise Lakenham & Tuckswood is being led by Community Action Norfolk, who employ the projects part time Community Development Worker Upon launching the project Sport for Change Community Development Worker Lucinda Leonard said, "There is funding available for physical activity projects in Lakenham and Tuckswood so if a group of neighbours, friends or perhaps a Scout group or luncheon club have an idea about getting more active and would like some support and funding to make it happen, please contact us. We'd love to hear residents' ideas – whether it's a street games competition, to a seated Zumba class or a Buggy Fit group for parents, let us know!"

"We can also help with bursaries for coaches to develop their skills by undertaking an agreed coaching qualification course; and if you'd like to volunteer to be involved- perhaps be on the project steering committee or take photographs of events or help encourage others to get active it would be great to hear from you!" added Lucinda.
