What is Athletics?

Athletics is a collection of track and field events that involve running, jumping and throwing.

The range of disciplines across the track, field, road and off-road provides an incredible diversity of events for different people with different skills and abilities. For other people athletics is about fitness and participation but the range of age groups, events, competitions and clubs means that athletics really is a truly inclusive sport. In many different ways athletics really is one of the most exciting, diverse and vibrant sport there is. For many the sport provides the ultimate challenge to their competitive abilities.

Benefits

  • Field events such as shot put help develop physical strength
  • Cardiovascular benefits from the running disciplines.
  • Social benefits from group training sessions

Costs

Disciplines such as running only require the cost to purchase suitable shoes. There are many beginners running groups across the country that are free to join and some that charge a small price of £1-2 per session. For more specialised athletic disciplines a membership with a club is likely to be required.

Involvement

If you want to run, jump or throw, athletics provides the perfect platform to compete. The UK Athletics Grassroots scheme provides information on how you can begin taking part whether as an athlete, coach, official or volunteer.

Equipment

Equipment needed is dependent on the discipline. But the key piece of equipment needed is some running shoes.

Facts

  • The very first race of the modern Olympics in 1896 was the men's 100m sprint.
